Installation of 50 weather stations at WASCAL

WASCAL (West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use) is a large-scale research-focused Climate Service Centre designed to help tackle this challenge and thereby enhance the resilience of human and environmental systems to climate change and increased variability. It does so by strengthening the research infrastructure and capacity in West Africa related to climate change and by pooling the expertise of ten West African countries and Germany.

The Competence Centre, a newly established institute in West Africa, carries out research and provides science-based advice to policymakers and stakeholders on climate change impacts, mitigation, and adaptation measures.

In december 2015, an international open public tender was launched for the procurement, supply and delivery of 50 AWS with software, according to WMO, including training and after-sales support over 5 years. The project was entirely financed by KfW (German Development Bank) and final award to Nesa was issued on March, 2016.

The solution proposed by Nesa and chosen by the Customer complies to all the industrial standard for the meteorological monitoring according to WMO. Factory training for technicians and administrators, supply of spare parts and remote after sales assistance are included, and in July 2017 the staff of WASCAL came to Nesa factory for a full training session.

All the 50 automatic stations are equipped with air T&Rh sensor, sonic wind sensor, secondary standard solar radiation sensor, barometric sensor, rain sensor Class A and soil temperature probes.

Data are captured and stored by the datalogger Linux TMF and transmitted via 3G modems to Customer’s server and our web-based software “Sunflower” collect and elaborate data. The project has the aim to allow the collection of reliable data to allow measures according to WMO across the following beneficiary Countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d‘Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo. WASCAL’s personnel, highly trained, will install all the 50 AWS with the cooperation of beneficiaries’ technicians and officers.

The whole amount of the contract, including delivery to final location and after-sales services, demonstrate the capability of Nesa to manage big contracts with satisfaction from the Customer.
